How much size shall I keep for root partition?

Hi I am Winchel, Is  there any limit or standard size for root partition? What is minimum size for this?

Hi   Winchel,

There are no limit size for root partition, You make your partition size as you can depend on your requirement, The minimum root partition size for RHEL  is 256 MB. But this is not good practice.  The standard root partition size is 500MB but this is too small and is not good practice.

Hello Winchel,

When you install applications on your computer, they are usually stored in the root partition. Some of those files include libraries, program executable as well as global data, user data such as configuration and file data and so forth. Therefore having a root partition that is very small will imply that it will be field up very fast and you will end up with no space to install more applications.

Therefore, when specifying your root partition it is important to just put in mind what kind of applications you intend to install on your computer and approximately how much space they will take.

How much size shall I keep for root partition?

For RHEL or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you should check the system requirements of the operating system to determine the default hard drive free space requirement. For Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, it requires 2 GHz or faster Intel Pentium 4 processor, 1 GB RAM, and 4 GB free space. In this version or edition, the space required is 4 GB.

This amount of hard drive space is for the operating system alone. It doesn’t include yet the space you need for the applications you will be installing in the future. This space should be a lot bigger to allow you to install more applications on your computer. In my computer, I set drive C to 100 GB and I have 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7.

So try setting or creating a root partition of about fifty to one hundred GB (50 GB – 100 GB) for the system drive to give you plenty of room to install applications.
