Increasing computer’s memory by using unused tower

Hi there! I need to know whether it will increase my computer's memory or not if I connect an unused tower with the one I am using right now which are similar. Currently, I am using AMD Athlon 64 processor with 2.39GHz and 384mb of RAM. Its operating system is Windows XP Home Edition 2002 SP3 version. Would appreciate if you please help me out. Thank you.

Hello Gloretha,

For sure that will increase your computer's speed. Now that you have only 384 MB of RAM on your computer, you will increase it to more that 700 MB which is suitable for general functions that you carry on the computer like using the word editor, moving files, editing pictures and other less memory intensive activities.

But if you will want to do activities like watching videos or gaming on your computer, you will need to increase the RAM capacity even more, to about 3 GB for that is the memory that cannot support gaming very well without slowing down the computer of seamlessly freezing.

When you say memory do you mean to say your random access memory? If that’s the case, connecting the other machine with your machine, like doing peer to peer connection, won’t really add memory to your computer. However if you can have it configured so that they will both act like two processors trying to complete the same task for you, like a cluster of computers, that’s a different story and yes it should increase output since both will act as one computer. If you aim is just to increase RAM, then you can just transfer the RAM from the other machine to the one that you use. Since both of them are the same, then they most likely have the same memory modules and the same motherboards. The RAM should be compatible.

If what you want to do is connect two computers or connect two CPU towers to increase your memory, I’m wondering how you will do that. You cannot run two computers and use the other computer’s memory as part of its memory. A computer’s memory is good only for itself. It cannot be shared with another computer.

If you want to increase your RAM, check if the other CPU has the same type of RAM as with your computer. If both computers are using the same type of RAM like both are using DDR1, DDR2, or DDR3, you can remove the memory modules from the other CPU and transfer them to your computer.

This will work and will increase your computer’s memory if you still have available memory slots on the motherboard. But if your computer is using like DDR1 RAM and the other CPU is using DDR2 or DDR3, for example, this can’t be done. Both have to be using the same memory type.
