My Windows professional is hanging when I shutdown the computer

Hi,

My computer has Windows 2000 Professional OS. However, I am having problems when trying to shutdown because the computer seems to hang and the screen turns into a strange teal color. I have no idea why this happens, if it is the monitor or other related display issues. Could someone please assist me on this?

Hello there! Do you have a third party OEM device driver or service installed in your computer? If yes, then that is the culprit in the hanging issue of your computer. You can fix this by troubleshooting the Advanced Power Management. Insert your Windows 2000 CD-ROM and look for the Support/Tools folder. Install the Apmstat.exe by double clicking Setup.exe. Then run the program by typing: apmstat -v . Uninstall or disable any Windows 2000 WDM drivers. If the hanging issue stops after this, you just need to update your WDM driver so it will function properly in Windows 2000. Good luck!

Hallo Rowland,

For how long have been experiencing the problem? If it started occurring lately then it could be due a virus attack to your computer, or maybe the programs or updates that you installed lately are the ones that are causing the problems. Maybe the programs have some compatibility issues that you will need to address by uninstalling them and getting new ones to install.

You can also run the system restore utility to remove any changes that you made that are causing the problems. Another thing you should do is to check the visual graphics adapter cables and ensure that they are tight. Check the other cables too.

If your computer keeps on freezing every time you shut it down, try restarting it using the last known good configuration option. Restart your computer then press F8 before the Windows logo appears. In “Advanced Boot Options” screen, scroll down and select “Last known good configuration” then hit Enter. After booting, try to shut down your computer again.

If this doesn’t work and the computer freezes again, try checking it with the System File Checker utility. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter. Insert your Windows setup CD or DVD when you are prompted then continue. Wait until it is complete. When it is finished, restart the computer.

If the problem continues, try updating your operating system to the latest Service Pack.
