Advantages and Disadvantages of Creating Two Partitions in Linux

I installed Linux Operating System on my computer and I want to know the pros and cons in creating two partitions rather than having a single partition. What are the good and bad side of it?

Disadvantages with two partitions? When your /root partition fills up, your system is more likely to crash but if you have a bigger drive, this is not a problem.

However, the advantage on having two partitions is that you can mount and dismount different file systems easily.

Just try to consider the following while partitioning disk:

1. It is easier to recover a corrupted file system or operating system when you partition a disk.

2. Smaller file systems are more efficient and swap partition can improve the performance.

3. You can boot multiple OS from a single hard disk.

4. Formatting the disk with various block sizes can increase disk space.

Hi,

 

If you would only have one partition in your hard drive, that means your operating system as well as all you documents, movies and everything else that you save on the computer will be in one place. If, for some very unfortunate event, you needed to reinstall your operating system, you will need another hard drive (external or internal) to backup your files as you will be losing them. If you have two partitions and you install the operating system into one of them, you can use the other partition as your backup drive or you data drive where your documents, movies, music and everything else will be saved. Should a fresh install be necessary, there would be no need to have an external backup source, just the other partition which makes it convenient.
