What is a Linux Raid system and what is the cost

I was with some tech friends of mine and I overheard them talk of a raid system and I had no clue what they were talking about, can someone please elaborate what a raid system does and is it that expensive to develop one? What could be the estimate amount for developing such a system?

What is a Linux Raid system and what is the cost

RAID ( Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data storage virtualization technology which is used to increase the logical capacity of storage devices being used. It ensures the increased read/write performance and increased redundancy if a hard disk fails. This is in the sense, data is distributed on the drivers. RAID is very flexible in hard disk and partition layout. The standard schemes which are nothing but ‘levels’ were evolved. RAID 0 to RAID 6 are the levels. The cost of implementation of RAID depends upon the hardware and software issues. Many operating systems like Apple’s OS X, Linux, Windows supports RAID.
