How can I disable the Windows XP System Restore?

I had a Malware attack and I can’t seem to delete it. I already run my Antivirus software few times now but it didn’t work. Until I found out that it is hidden on my system restore area. And I can’t find a way to delete it. I want to know how I can temporarily disable my System Restore. I am running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. Please send me some help. Thanks.

Restore the system of Windows XP can be deactivated but the problem will not solve only by deactivating this feature. Rather it is a kind of troubleshooting approach. I would prefer activating it later unless you are facing a similar type of problems. After deactivating the System Restore option, you need to operate the Antivirus system on safe method.

You need to understand that if you deactivate or turn off the option System Restore, the Windows XP may remove all the refurbish stations that earlier keep changes in Windows. Now if the System Restoring option is off, then you cannot refurbish Windows XP as done before.

Again if you turn on the feature called System Restore, Windows XP will generate restore points again for following modifications in Windows. And it is possible to reinstate Windows again to the earliest time of reinstating points.

For deactivating or turning off System Restore on Windows XP:

  1. Press Start, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
  2. Press the tab named System Restore.
  3. Check Turn off System Restore check box or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
  4. Press OK button.
  5. A message will be displayed such as:

    • You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer
    • Do you want to turn off System Restore?
  6. Press Yes button for confirming it. The window will automatically shut down within a few second.
  7. Please restart your PC upon completion of all the above mentioned steps and finally run in safe mode. Check with Anti Malware or Ant

For activating or turning on System Restore on Windows XP:

  1. Press Start button, right-click My Computer and then choose Properties.
  2. Press the tab named System Restore.
  3. Unclick the Tick mark on the Turn off System Restore check box or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
  4. Then press OK.

The window will automatically shut down within a few second.

Please pursue the steps in order to turn off the system and again turn on. Press Start, then right click on My Computer and then click Properties. In the box named System Properties click System Restore. Please choose the option of either Turn off System restore or Turn off System restore on all drives. Finally press OK.

After all these steps, you may see the message below

You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer. Do you want to turn off System Restore?

Press close for closing the box named System properties.

Most viruses that infect or hide in the System Volume Information folder in the root of the system drive are worms and I encountered several cases of these Trojan horses infecting my System Volume Information folder. If your antivirus identified that the infection or the Trojan horse is hiding in the System Volume Information folder, the immediate solution is to deactivate this folder by disabling System Restore.

To do this, right-click “My Computer” and select “Properties”. Go to “System Restore” tab and check “Turn off System Restore on all drives” then click “Apply” and then “OK”. This should now delete everything in the System Volume Information folder including the virus.

Now, to make sure your system is clean, download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install it. Once installed, start Sophos then wait until its virus signature database gets updated. When update is complete, click to start scanning your system. This will scan everything on your computer including external drives like USB flash drive and external hard drive connected via USB port.

Scanning will take time depending on the size of your drives and the amount of data. When a virus is identified at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. You don’t need to uninstall your existing antivirus to use this tool because it works alongside any antivirus program you may have.
