Hi,

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.2. And now I find that I cannot open any PDF file that I download. I cannot open these PDF files on either Preview or on Acrobat Reader. I can still open PDF file that I had downloaded earlier, but not the newly downloaded ones. This problem happens only when I download and save the file on my pc. I can open these files online without any issues. I tried reinstalling Acrobat Reader and this was not of any use. Can anyone help me please? Regards

The file “BDP-93 English Manual v2.21.pdf” could not be opened.

It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview

doesn’t recognize.

I’m not sure if this is really possible where you can successfully open the PDF files directly from the website but they are no longer accessible when downloaded onto your computer. The reason is that, when you open the PDF files from the website, it will require you to use your web browser to logically access the PDF files.

And when you open one of the PDF files directly from your web browser, your computer will still use the PDF reader available on your computer to open the PDF file and display it in the web browser. Adobe Reader includes a plug-in that attaches to the web browser and this is the component used when opening PDF files online.

So, if you can successfully open the PDF files directly in your web browser then there is nothing wrong with your PDF reader or your Adobe Reader that’s why reinstalling it is not needed. Try this, connect a USB flash drive into your computer and then download the PDF files again but put them in the USB flash drive instead of saving them in your hard drive.

This way you can see if there is a difference when saving the files in a different container. Once both files are downloaded see if you can open them using Adobe Reader. If you are successful, try checking your hard drive for physical errors using any disk utility application. Another way is to use a different computer to download the PDF files. This way you are sure that both files are undamaged when downloaded.
