Hello,

I have been facing issues following installation of Ubuntu 10.10. Whenever I try to install stuff via the Software Center.

However I have been able to install software using Synaptic and apt-get.

Any idea what is going on here?

Check if you are currently running another software management tool,e.g. Synaptic  or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time.

Cheers,
Donal

This problem occurs when some package manager is already running in the back group. You can't have two or more package management running on a Ubuntu system. Because a package manager locks the installation path of the system and gets an exclusive access of it and blocks any other software to have access on it simultaneously. check if synaptic package manager or update manager is running on the system.

If yes, stop the applications and then try again to install the app. This should work perfectly.
