I don’t understand why you need to start QuickTime Player in compatibility mode since you are only using Windows XP. This operating system does not have any incompatibility issue regarding QuickTime applications.

Maybe you are using an early version of QuickTime that’s why it still does not support Windows XP. If you are still using a very old version of QuickTime, you will surely encounter lots of problems with it like the one you are experiencing now.

Upgrade your current version to QuickTime 7.7.1. This latest version fully supports Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Download QuickTime from Apple’s official web site, https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837?locale=en_US.

If you don’t want to upgrade your current version, try uninstalling QuickTime then check your computer for any possible errors. Use a disk utility application to check the system. After that, install QuickTime again.
