The machine I am using freezes completely and stops responding when I open Outlook to read over 4,000 unread emails. Outlook says they are “loading”, but nothing happens and I would like to fix this.

Outlook express can't process too much files. This is because the computer performance is slowing down. Before you open your Outlook and reach those 4000 messages, you need to make sure that your computer's hard drive is processing too much memory.

Right click on the system tray then click on Task Manager. On the Applications window, stop all applications that are running.

To stop the applications;

Highlight on the Task application, then click on End Task button
Do this steps again on the other running applications

Then go to Processes tab;

Check all Memory that eats too much files and processes to much memory. End this processes to lower memory usage and CPU.

After performing all these steps, you may need to open your Outlook once more.

Go to your Inbox and I would suggest to delete some. Put a check on each box you want to delete and click on the delete button. Another way to delete them all at once is to press the CTRL + Shift key and click on each email address you want to delete.
Then click on the delete button
