You did not mention the current configuration of you computer. I think the existing office program you installed earlier was not removed while installing Office 2010. If so remove your previous installed office program. Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. Note that you need successful uninstall of the system. On the other hand, it may be a compatibility issue. Office 2010 requires Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. So upgrade the existing Windows XP with service pack 3 if necessary. Then try to install Office 2010 on your system carefully. I think it will be ok.
