You may receive error code “0x8007232b” when you try to activate a new installation of Microsoft Windows when the KMS activation server is down or from a volume license media. Users may not be prompted to enter a valid product key during the initial installation but this behavior will trigger the error when you try to activate the operating system using the standard Windows Activation wizard.

This error code may be accompanied by one of the following messages:

“DNS Name does not exist.”
“Windows could not be activated. Key management services (KMS) host could not be located in domain name system (DNS), please have your system administrator verify that a KMS is published correctly in DNS.”
“The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.”

This error is more common on Windows 7 and Windows 8 though this is not a given fact. To fix the problem, press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” and then hit Enter to launch an elevated command prompt. In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:

slmgr -ipk xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx

Replace “xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx – xxxxx” with your product key and with the dashes included. The product key is a set of 25 alphanumeric characters. Before hitting Enter, verify that your product key is still valid and don’t forget the dashes in between. If this is successful, you should see a “Windows Host Script” popup after several seconds.
