Microphones are transducers which convert sound into electric signals. The most commonly used microphones are the dynamic and condenser type. The boom microphone for the iPhone is a condenser microphone. Generally, microphones do not require power to be able to convert sound to electric signals.

Even your earphones can be used as a microphone (you can test this yourself, plug it in your PC or laptop microphone jack and record something). But the condenser MIC requires some power, and the most common source of power would either be phantom power or a battery. The iPhone does not provide phantom power so a condenser microphone would never work with an iPhone, therefore, those iPhone boom microphones must be powered with batteries.

Of course, those boom MIC's for the iPhone are powered by a single AAA battery (Check it out here). In conclusion, the boom MIC for your iPhone will not consume your iPhone battery.

Cheers
