Look through your computer to C:\Program Files if you properly remove the previous version installed. All Window Live Essentials programs must be completely deleted, if not that might be the cause of the difficulty in installing the new version.

To uninstall it properly:

Go to “Start Menu” Click the “Control Panel” click twice the “Add or Remove”.

After choosing “Windows Live” on the “Currently Installed Programs” tap “Uninstall”.

Then Select “Remove one or More Windows Live Program” then click again the “Uninstall”.

After rechecking and uninstalling the old version start updating your Windows Live On the Website of Microsoft. It is necessary that you inactivate the third party firewall, and only activate the firewall after you installed the new updated version of Microsoft Live. Go to your internet browser, and reset-up its settings, After doing so, restart your computer. And now try to download and reinstall again the Microsoft Live Essentials 2011.

That may be a problem that is being caused by the windows live program that you have already installed. It is hindering the installation of the updated version, and therefore I will suggest that you do the following:

  • Uninstall all the updates that you have installed.
  • And then go back to the windows updater and run the update. It should install properly now.

In case it does not install properly, then you will need to check if the Windows Live Essentials has been listed under the "important" updates, or it has been listed under the "optional" updates. In case it is optional, then you can just ignore it by unchecking its box, and then run the updater again. You should not be able to get the error this time round.

That will really happen if the previous version is still installed. But if you say the other version has already been removed, the problem is probably in the registry or the uninstallation of the program did not complete or is incomplete. To fix this, you need to install back the other version of Windows Live Essentials.

Once the previous version is installed, download the free version of Revo Uninstaller and install it. Once installed, start Revo Uninstaller then select Windows Live Essentials among the applications and click “Uninstall”. Follow the normal uninstall process. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click to restart later. When uninstall is complete, click “Scan” to scan your computer for any leftover files and delete everything it finds.

This removes everything the program created on your computer. When it is finished, close Revo Uninstaller then restart the computer. After booting, try installing Windows Live Essentials 2011 again then see if it works.
