I work in an office environment, where all internet traffic is restricted. Most popular websites are also blocked. Is there a possibility of bypassing the restriction imposed on Internet traffic?

To block or filter internet traffic, the commonly used method is by implementing an Internet Proxy. An Internet Proxy sits between the client computer and the Internet.

All out going requests are filtered by the Internet proxy. It searches for a specific pattern in the URL before deciding whether to block or not to block it.

It's very hard to circumvent a corporate proxy that is filtering internet traffic.

TekGirl is correct. It is a bit difficult to circumvent a corporate firewall.

However, there are websites offered in the internet that create a "tunnel" to the destination website. These websites require you to type the destination URL on their text box. When you submit, the website "scrapes" the destination page and shows it as if the host website is delivering the content.

They are called proxy websites.

This "proxy website" concept is interesting. Are these sites able to show the destination pages in full form?

More or less yes. These websites scrape the destination page, then make some modifications on the scraped page.  This is necessary for example, all the destination page links on the scraped page need to be encoded to point to the proxy website.

This is because, if you click a link, that page need to be scraped and shown. Therefore "proxy websites" alter the original links.  Due to this, certain functionality breaks. If there is a drop down with a set of values, and the original site refreshes on selection, you will notice that this does not work when the website is viewed via a proxy website.

Therefore you can still view the sites in reduced functionality.

There is another twist on Firewalls. Firewalls cannot read encrypted page content. For example if you are requesting a page using the HTTPS protocol, the "initial" URL is readable by the proxy and not the content that is being transferred.

This is used by these "proxy-websites". They transfer the content to you via HTTPS. Thus circumvents content filter block imposed by certain firewalls.
