Hi,

I am using Mac Operating System and got some extension error message saying “System extenion cannot be used”. I have tried several times by reinstalling it to fix the issue but can’t get any solution. Need help. Thanks!

System extension cannot be used

The system extension “/System/Library/Extension/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact product’s vendors for an update.

It seems this error is somewhat triggered when you update iTunes to version 11.4 which, in this case, is the latest version when the error was first encountered. It affected many OS X users and posted complaints on the Apple community website but not a single Apple employee responded to the complaints. There seems to be two solutions to this issue. The first one is very basic.

Here is the first method. First, download the latest version from iTunes Software. Next, uninstall your existing iTunes software from your computer. Run the installer you downloaded to install the latest version of iTunes. After this, turn off your Apple device and connect it to your computer using the USB cable. See if this works. If it doesn’t, here’s a much practical method.

The one that needs to be fixed is the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file which needs to be re-installed from the iTunes package. First, if your Apple device is connected to the computer, unplug it first. Next, download the latest version of iTunes from the link above. After that, you need to remove the old kernel extension.

Next, run the installer you downloaded to install the latest iTunes. Once the installation completes, you need to load the updated kernel extension.

And that’s it. iTunes should work fine after this.
