Sometimes we are confused about the difference between RAM and HDD or Hard Disk Drive. Read the given below to know the main difference: RAM is also called memory on the other hand HDD is called storage device or space. RAM has the smallest amount with his 8GB and HDD with bigger amount like commonly 120 GB to 4 TB. Ram is the temporary store program or any file, on the other hand the HDD store the file or program for permanently.

The store file program is gone when you turn of the computer from ram but HDD doesn’t. I give you more links to know more here are some: http://www.answers.com/Q/Difference_between_hard_disk_and_RAM.

Thank you.

Hard drive and RAM,

We need to know the definition of each one, before knowing the difference
Hard drive

A hard drive has metal platter that spinning extremely fast. You might already seen your DVD player spin the disc it is almost the same, the disc spin and the head will move along the platter to read and write data to the platter.

The hard drive has the biggest amount of storage and it is used for long term

Benefit of hard drive:

The price is good

You can shut down your computer and continue working from the last point you save later.
The downside:

It is a device that has a head and platter which mean mechanical device, it might be slower

RAM

Random Access Memory, we call it memory nowadays, usually it measured in MB and GB
RAM form is like a chip and we call it computer chips. We can connect RAM to the motherboard through special connector. Using RAM can help to provide faster storage of data to the computer.
Benefit:
Fast
The downside:

It starts fresh when you turn off the computer and try to access it again, it means RAM does not save your data, it simply forgets everything when you turn off your computer.
It is more expensive compare to the hard drive

The more memory you add to the computer, the faster your computer will be. If your memory is used all of them, then the computer will need to create a special space known as virtual memory file.

This is done by using reserve space in hard disk and create the additional RAM.  The process known as “swapping” and will drag your system slow.

If we do some calculation, average computer nowadays will use 200 nanoseconds to access RAM, this is extremely fast compared to speed when accessing a hard disc (12,000,000 nanoseconds). To make it even easier to compare, it is like doing 3.5 minute job in 4.5 months.

Hello Katzsung,

A hard disk on a computer is very important because it is the one that holds all the files that you create and save on the computer. It is used to hold the operating on which all the applications and programs that you install on the computer run on. A bigger hard disk size will enable you to save a large number of files on it and therefore eliminating any urgent need for an external hard drive to back up the data.

RAM on the hand is equally important. It determines the speed at which the system operates. When the memory is so small then the computer will be very slow, but a bigger memory will lead to fast performance of the computer.
