All About The Wifi System And It Uses

WIFI, the word, is an acronym for Wireless Fidelity. It is the same as WLAN. A Wi-Fi network makes use of the same principal of communication as all other wireless systems. A wireless local area network is normally password protected and can also be public or without password protection which permits any devices within range to connect to the WLAN network. Wi-Fi-compatible devices can connect to the internet through the WLAN network as well as through a wireless access point.

This access point or hotspot has a range of around twenty meters or 66 feet indoors and a much greater range outdoors. Wi-Fi is vulnerable compared to wired connections specifically because an intruder doesn’t require a physical connection. Web pages that utilize TLS are protected but intruders can easily detect unencrypted internet access. That’s why Wi-Fi has adopted a variety of encryption technologies.

The first encryption method used was WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy which was later proven to be weak and vulnerable. Higher quality protocols were added later such as WPA or Wi-Fi Protected Access and WPA2. In 2007, an optional feature called WPS or Wi-Fi Protected Setup was added which had a severe defect that permits an attacker or intruder to recover or acquire the router’s password.
