If you are upgrading your operating system to Windows 7 from either Windows Vista or Windows XP, you should make sure you meet all the requirements. If you are already running Windows Vista and wish to upgrade to Windows 7, you shouldn’t have any problem. But if you’ll be upgrading from Windows XP, you should meet the following requirements: 1 GHz or faster processor either x86 or x64, 1 GB minimum for x86 and 2 GB minimum for x64, 16 GB free disk space for x86 and 20 GB for x64, and a video card that supports DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Additionally, if you’ll be upgrading from Windows XP, you should be visiting How To Upgrade XP To Windows 7. There is no direct upgrade method of upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7 and you need a lot of customization before you achieve this. In your case, don’t start the Windows 7 installer in unattended mode since it is already causing an error.

If you are using Windows Vista, just run the Windows 7 setup CD normally and upgrade your operating system.
