Hi, the Linux internals is derived from UNIX. At those old times, the computers had not the enough power to be administered by a graphical user interface. Nowadays, Linux is much more similar to other OS like Windows and MAC OS. In Ubuntu, for example, the user can use his computer without knowing anything about its command shell. But remember that in critical operations Linux can give more reliability thanks to lack of GUI, and the graphic environment runs only in user application, more safety related to Windows that runs his graphical interface in kernel mode.
