Why did MSN messenger shut down?

Hi all, I am have been using Internet for almost a decade now and I have seen and used many applications over the years, some which will never be forgotten because of the impact they left on so many of the people. One such was the MSN Messenger, long before Facebook, we all used it and simply loved it for so many reasons. I still don't get it, why did they put it to an end? Was it because of Facebook or some other reason? Please fill me with the details

Why did MSN messenger shut down?

Messenger will be fully retired on October 31^st. messenger aired and earned its respect for fifteen (15) years. I really do still remember connecting a phone to my computer and running in dial-up. The reason is that they wanted to support and promote the usage of Skype. Microsoft been planning to switch its users to Skype since last year. After October 31^st Chinese users will have to use Skype and I believe that Microsoft offered $2 for any users who will switch to Skype.
