Hi,

I'm about to upgrade my desktop computer and I'm undecided whether to go for Intel or AMD processor.

I'm using my computer for work and gaming like NBA 2k11 and Need for Speed Carbon.

I usually open several applications for work all at the same time.

Please help me decide.

Dear Matthewwalker2348,

There are different prospects you have to consider.  I am describing different comparisons between the latest editions of Intel and amd.

These are mostly same for other types of processors of this two companies. In case of image rendering, video editing, pdf creation AMD is better than Intel.  AMD is very good in power consumption. Audio encoding and archiving is also better.  But in case of gaming Intel is much better than AMD.  Image processing is better in Amd . But overall raw performance is in favor of Intel.  So these are the facts hope these will help.

Thank you.

If you're after performance above else (and you've plenty of money) then Intel processors are the way to go. You'll be considering a Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 processor, which will deliver budget, mid-range or high-end performance, respectively.

AMD processors aren't currently able to compete with Intel for raw speed, but that might be changing soon. I'm using Toshiba with AMD processor right now, it's affordable and user friendly like Intel. For me, they're both good but it's up to you if you have money for it better choose Intel but if you want to have something affordable, yet same like Intel, choose AMD.

Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors are superior to AMD's x2 and phenom x3/x4 lines. They consume less power and perform better. In benchmark tests, Intel's lowest quad model the Q6600 outperforms AMD's fastest phenom x4 processor.

The catch is that Intel's cheapest quad core still costs 20-30$ more than AMD's top of the line.
