The XLS index file is linked or associated with the “Ms Excel” by Microsoft.  Excel file can be used to make spreadsheets.

The files or programs that end with the extension (.xls) mostly refers to the file containing information (graphs, data, macros and formulas etc.) in a spreadsheet , that can only be opened and modified by using Ms Excel software.

There are other file extensions of excel as well.

They include:

• Xlm – Excel Macro
• Xll – Excel Add-in
• Xld – Excel Database
• Xlc – Excel Chart

Here are some advantages of the index files:

• Easy processing
• While selecting a proper key field, it gets easier to find a specific record from the large amount of data.
• Any fields of the record can be used as a key. The key field must be alpha-numeric or numeric.

Now some disadvantages:

• Extra data structures have to be maintained which use much disk space especially data structures with long key values.
• It is quite important to maintain and organize the index files from time to time. It will help to get rid of the deleted records and performance will be improved.
