Vista laptop opens a file instead of saving it

Opening (instead of saving) a file from e-mail or a website works fine on my PC which is running on XP. When I do the same on my Vista laptop, it says that the file has gone to a temporary folder, but when I perform a search, it’s not there. I also tried saving the file to My Documents and the Desktop, but it doesn’t work. What am I doing wrong?

The file will be saved to a temporary folder when you try and open it on your machine. You won't be able to search for it as the file will be name differently that how it is named as an attachment. It would have question marks or capital letters in a name that doesn't really make sense in the temporary folder. If you don't have the program associated with the file or a program that is designed to open a file with the file extension of the attached file, then your computer won't be able to open such a file. Try choosing Save then choose a custom folder that you created and not in the folders that are user account dependent. Try also to make sure that you have the necessary programs to open such files.
