Verizon Internet Modem Router Issue

I have Verizon DSL as my Internet Provider and I'm thinking of switching over to AT&T. I keep on turning off and back on my modem as a tech support representative advised me to do so every time I can't connect. Do I need to replace my modem? I often have connection problems with it since day 1 and very frustrated about the speed that I'm getting. My speed is 1MBPS but even browsing facebook is difficult. I know there must be something wrong.
