I have been using Microsoft Visio for my project, and I created a file to save my work. I opened it the second time, and it showed Visio internal error 2131. How can I fix it?

There are some ways to trouble shoot the problems in different versions of Microsoft Visio. Here are the steps to diagnose your problem:

  1. Open Visio and on the Options of File Tab click Trust Center.
  2. Click Disable all macros with notification on the Trust Center Settings.
  3. Check on the Disable all Application Add-ins on the select box of Add-ins.
  4. Click OK. Close and Restart Visio.

The full error reads:

“Visio internal error: #2131
Action 1281: New Document
First try closing and reopening the file. Next try restarting Visio.”

The error started appearing in the autumn of 2011 and it appears only when a user tries to perform a new RMIM Design by starting Visio and selecting to create a new design based on the RMIM2 template. What’s interesting about this error is that it doesn’t affect the ability to open and process an existing design.

The source of the problem is the file called “RMIM2.vst,” an HL7 template whose main function is to create a link between the new drawing and the file called “RMIM2.vss,” the RMIM Designer “stencil” file. The template file has been in use and unmodified for at least six (6) years.

It seems one of the recent Windows updates made a change to Visio which now detects the file as corrupted. To fix the problem, open Visio without opening or designating an existing drawing file. Next, open the file called “RMIM2.vst” located in your “HL7” solutions directory under “MyShapes” in Visio 2003, 2007, and 2010.

When you are prompted to select a RIM to open, click “Cancel,” “Cancel” then “OK” until it stops prompting. In Visio, click “File” then “Save.” Here, since the source file was created in Visio 2002, you will be prompted to select a format as shown in the right panel. Selecting either “Current Visio Format” or “Visio 2002 Format” will work.

The only difference is that “Visio 2002 Format” will take a longer time to save. When you are finished, close Visio. This should fix the problem. You should now be able to initiate or create a new diagram from the RMIM2 template.
