Software to convert DVD into digital copy

Hi,

I love movies and I have a whole collection. It is hard to be carrying around my DVD folder and I want a way to keep all movies on a hard drive. What can I use to convert the videos to a format like avi, mp4 etc? What do you recommend and why?
