Hello dear friends,

I am having error while disabling the volume shadow copying service on my windows 2008 server which is installed on Pentium Core 2 Duo System having 4 of RAM.

The service was enabled, but it is not in use for any of our official activity. So, being on safe side, I tried to disable it so that resources used by this service become available to operations.

But when I try to do so, I was greeted with following error:

Shadow copy error

Error

An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of shadow Copy Component.

A failure occurred accessing the Writer metadata.

Please put a light on the consequences of disabling this service and the way through which I can attain this objective.

Thanks.

Hi Marya,

Here is a simple step how to solve your problem. Just follow the instruction carefully.

1. Go to Start/Program/Administrative Tools/Services.

2. Double click on the volume Shadow copy service and change the startup type to Manual. See VolumeShadowCopyProperties.jpg

3. Reboot the server if the error continues. Usually, a reboot of the server will resolve this issue.

Hope this will help you.

Hello Marya,

It is quite easy to understand that the problem is with Volume Shadow Copy Service. Now to resolve this problem we can try some few things. First try by rebooting the PC. If the problem is solved than definitely it is just a simple problem. Otherwise we have to update the VSS and once that is updated now check it by using command prompt, in command prompt write “vssadmin list writers”. If it does not work properly after that also then contact with the Microsoft support. For this problem I collected this link so that you can update your server easily. The link is:

Thank you,
