How can I recover password protected Microsoft Word file (which I created) if I forget the password?

If you have forgotten the password for your word file and you are unable to open your file then you really do not need to worry about it.
There are many software's that can be used to recover the password for the MS Word protected file.
I would like to recommend you "Word Password Recovery Master".

Once download the software, open it and select your password protected MS Word file.

Since you are having a problem with the password in your Microsoft Office Word document, it would be best if you will download a password recovery application to recover your document’s password and to gain access again.
I have a software called Advanced Office Password Recovery 3.03 Professional Edition and with a serial too but sorry can’t share it here. Instead, download its latest version, Advanced Office Password Recovery 5.12.432, from Elcomsoft Proactive Software PASSWORD RECOVERY

With this software you can have access again to any password-protected document you have.
You don’t have to worry about forgetting the password again since this application can easily recover the password for you in an instant.
You can also remove the password of the document if you wish.
