Windows Server 2008 R2 is an OS by Microsoft. It came to manufacturing on the date July 22 in the year 2009 and became available on October 22 in the year 2009. According to the Blog of Windows Server, the availability of retail was September 14, 2009.
The difference between both Web Server as well as Standard Edition are the services that the servers can install by default. With the edition of Web Server, you have a limit to IIS; but you could perform Apache if you wish to. You can even run any executable files you need on the web server with no issue.
