RAM or graphics card upgrade for a gaming laptop

I decided to upgrade my gaming laptop but due to budget constraints I need to choose one first as a priority. Should it be my RAM or graphics card that I should consider first? My RAM is 1 gig 800 MHZ and graphics card is nVidia 7200GS. Obviously, I just want to avoid lags while I play online games and at the same time, no freezing screen.

John,

To understand the working of a high definition graphics game, there will be lot of pre-processing involved before the actual video is displayed on the screen. So, if we just increase the size of RAM that will definitely increase the performance in terms of video refreshing rate, but may not help in terms of the processing of the data for display.

The graphics card will have a dedicated processor to do digital image processing and digital video processing. It is always better to choose a high end graphics card in terms of processing capability and video RAM capacity rather than just upgrading the RAM.

Sharon

Hi there,

  • My first option is to choose a Memory Card if you want to run your game faster.
  • The caused of lags depends on "How the pc will delivers the system to  function."
  • Changing the graphic card will just give you a better video performance in your computer.
  • Video card will depend on how much the Gigabyte the RAM has installed.
  • Adding RAM will make the performance even faster. And thus give a great performance to game.
  • As long as your RAM is 2-4 Gb and your Graphic card is 512Mb-1Gb, this will make your game even better.
  • I hope this will help you decide. Beside, is your own choice to be made.

Take Care Gamer…..

If you only have 1 GB RAM and you need to decide which to upgrade first, the RAM or the video card, I guess it would be wise to select the RAM. Because at 1 GB of physical memory, every process on your computer is slow.

This amount is not enough to store more data to the memory and instead will have to transfer other data for processing to the virtual memory or page file which uses the hard drive as memory space. Processing data is a lot faster with the actual physical memory than with the hard drive.

When upgrading the memory of your computer, check with your motherboard on what type of memory module is supported. The latest SDRAM at the moment is DDR4. Earlier types include DDR3, DDR2, and DDR1.
