PhotoShop CS2 Error displayed when using Wine-Doors

Hi All,

I am trying to get Photoshop working on my Ubuntu machine and so far have not been very successful. I installed the application from application from a wine-doors install and had it installed perfectly without any trouble. And I tried launching it and that worked fine too and Photoshop opened. I closed the application after just testing some features and did not save any work. However, today when I try to open Photoshop, I get an unable to continue error message. An application that working perfectly suddenly finds an unrecoverable error today!!! I have not the faintest idea as to what this hardware or system error refers too. Everything was fine until last night. And there were definitely no changes to the system configuration. From where did this error spring up suddenly? I tried removing wine and removing the .wine folder manually and installed again from scratch. But still no go. I don’t seem to have that beginner’s luck anymore. Can anyone here tell me what is wrong? Thanks a million for your help.

Unable to continue because of a hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable.

Though officially, Linux Ubuntu is not supported by Adobe Photoshop CS2, it can still be made to work on Ubuntu using the WINE compatibility layer. Adobe Photoshop CS2 is one of the fewer versions of Adobe Photoshop that can work on Linux. Here is the proper procedure how you can install and run Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Linux Ubuntu.

First step is to install WINE. You can also install WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and this is good because this will also install the script Winetricks. Once installed, open Winetricks. You can do it from the Unity Dash and type without quotes “winetricks” in the search bar. See image.

On the next screen, select a wineprefix or select the next task you want to do. See image.

Next, select “Install a Windows DLL or component”. See image.

On the next screen, scroll down and check the boxes for “gecko” and “vcrun6”, and click OK. When the installation is finished, go back and open Winetricks, Install a Windows DLL or component, and select “Install a font”. On the next screen, select “corefonts” and click OK. See image.

Finally, after installing WINE, we can now install Adobe Photoshop CS2. Right-click on the “photoshop.exe” file installer, select Open with, and then WINE Windows Program Loader. Continue with the installation until it is finished. When the installation is complete, run Adobe Photoshop CS2 from the Unity Dash.
