No disk drives shown in My Computer

There are different ways of hiding and unhiding drive letters on the computer and they sometimes vary depending on the operating system you are using. I don’t have problems hiding and unhiding drives on my computer and I use partition software to do that. It’s less complicated since I only need to run the software and do a couple of clicks and that’s it, the selected drive is already hidden. But for those who do not have any partition software, there are different ways of doing these tasks. You can either go to the Local Group Policy or via the Windows Registry.

Hiding or unhiding drives through the Local Group Policy can be done using the Local Group Policy Editor. Depending on the operating system you are using, in Windows XP the editor can be launched by going to Start, Run, type “gpedit.msc” [without the double quotes] then hit Enter. Here’s what follows after that:

• On the left pane, select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components then Windows Explorer.
• Double-click on “Hide these specified drives in My Computer”.
• Under Setting tab, click Enabled then select the drives you wish to hide from the dropdown menu below.
• Click OK then close the window.
