Please help me!

My webcam and microphone is not working with Windows Live Messenger. My contacts cannot see and hear me on their end while on a video conversation.

I’m using a Windows XP computer and running on high-speed internet connection. I have tried using my devices on another computer and it worked perfectly.

Good day. Have you tried running the Audio/Video Tuning wizard on Windows Live Messenger? Before you can use your devices on Windows Live Messenger, you first setup all devices and install it in Windows Live Messenger. This can be done by connecting your webcam and microphone into your computer and then follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger
  2. Click on Tools and then select Set up audio and video devices
  3. Click on next and then just follow the direction on the wizard box
  4. After finishing the installation wizard, try using the video call feature

No success. I have tried the steps you gave and it did not work. I am still unable to establish a two-way audio and video conversation with my contact. Let me add that this issue happens with all my contact when using this computer. Hope you can help me further.

Do you have the latest updates for your Windows XP computer? If not, try scanning for updates to make sure that this is not a problem with Windows XP. If the issue still persists after updating Windows, this could be a problem with the router or firewall on your computer. Some routers and firewalls block the ports used by the audio and video feature. Please make sure that the UDP ports 5004 – 65535 are not blocked on both firewall and router in order for the audio/video feature to function. You can isolate the cause of the issue by doing these:

– Temporarily disable the firewall and see if you will be able to use the audio/video feature.

– Bypass the router by directly connecting your Internet connection cable directly to your computer’s network card. Now try to have an audio/video chat.

If you found out that one of these two are causing the issue, please contact the manufacturer of your router or firewall for assistance on how to open ports 5004 – 65535.

I have tried both procedure but none of it worked. It appears that the problem is not on my firewall or router.  Do you have any other solution in mind? I use Windows Live Messenger to communicate with my family abroad so it’s very important for me to use the video feature.

I understand how important it is for you to have this feature running. Well, I’m definitely running out of ideas. But let me ask you, have you tried reinstalling the software? There is a possibility that the issue is caused by a corrupted program. Try performing a clean installation of Windows Live Messenger, it might work. Here’s how:

1. Uninstall Windows Live Messenger using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel

2. Perform a DiskCleanUp by going to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk CleanUp. Once you’re on the Disk CleanUp window, just follow the instructions.

3. Delete Messenger registry keys using CMD, you can launch CMD by clicking on Start, click Run, type CMD, and then press ENTER.Once you’re on CMD, type the commands below and the press enter after each line:

– REG DELETE HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows LiveMessenger /f

– REG DELETE HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows LiveMessenger /f

– REG DELETE HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows LiveCommunications ClientsShared /f

– REG DELETE HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftIdentityCRL /f

– REG DELETE HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesusnjsvc /f

4. Restart computer and then reinstall WLM. Now try using the video feature.

Hey after some research, I found out that the issue can also be caused by the QoS Packet Scheduler in Windows XP. This is a component of Windows that controls traffic particularly on audio and video communication. To help resolve the issue, you can try to disable QoS to allow free flowing traffic for Windows Live Messenger audio and video conversation. Follow these steps:

1. Go to your computers Control Panel

2. Go to Network and Internet connections and then select Network Connections

3. From the list of internet connection, right-click on the Local Area Connection that is currently connected and then select Properties

4. Make sure that the QoS Packet Scheduler check box is unchecked

5. Click OK and then Save. Now restart the computer and re-launch WLM

Good news! I have tried both your suggestion and the disabling of QoS resolved the issue. I can now connect with my contacts using the video feature. My contacts can now hear and see me through Windows Live Messenger. Thank very much.
