My friend bought a laptop recently and when he switched it on I could some kind of images with their names written below them. He told me that they are called icons of computer desktop.  Can you help me knowing more about this?

Icons are the basics of a computer which are present in almost all kinds of windows. They help us by providing an easy access to various files, folders, application, games and many more things. Every icon has its own notation or image which we can easily customize and set according to our wish. The most important icons in a computer are my computer, recycle bin, control panel.
