Dear Marilyn,

Information Systems is any combination of information technology and people's activities that support operations, management and decision making. In a very broad sense, the term information system is frequently used to refer to the interaction between people, processes, data and technology. In this sense, the term is used to refer not only to the information and communication technology that an organization uses, but also to the way in which people interact with this technology in support of business processes

Information systems typically include an ICT component but are not purely concerned with ICT, focusing in instead, on the end use of information technology. Information systems help to control the performance of business processes.

Information Technology is the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

Information technology can be considered as a subset of information systems. It deals with the technology part of any information system.

Difference between information systems and information technology.

Information system consists of various factors like technology, psychology, survey, etc. whereas information technology is combined of scientific methods and technical process.

Whereas information systems focuses on the system making use of technology, information technology focuses on technology and how it can help in disseminating information .information systems deals with the business side of technology as information technology deals with the technical side.

Information systems personal are business oriented and focus on the applications and implications of computing in the business domain .Information technology does not focus on a single domain in which It is practiced, but instead focuses on the selection, integration and deployment of computing technology.

Information systems require the business skills to thrive in the Board Room and learn enough about the technology to make sound strategic decisions. On the other hand, information technology generally consists of planning and deploying networking infrastructure or integrates databases or builds significant Web sites.

Thanks,

Information System is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, processing data, and delivering information, knowledge, and digital products. It is the combination of Information Technology and the people’s activities that supports management, operation, and decision-making. Business firms and other organizations rely on information systems to carry out and manage their operations, interact with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace.

Information Technology or IT, on the other hand, is the development, study, support, design, implementation, and management of computer-based knowledge. It covers a broad range of services. Information Technology would cover network support, computer repair, computer maintenance, computer builds, software engineering, website design, internet marketing, information technology covers just about every aspect of what you would associate with anything that is designed or managed by a computer or by a network or by a piece of software. It also covers the software we use.
