I’m having difficulty on consulting search engine optimization for my website

I just developed my website project and of course as everybody would want it to be, I want it to be more interactive, useful, and the likes. I happen to have heard of this Search Engine Optimization, yet as of now I have no knowledge of it.

What could be the possible guidelines or criteria I have to follow in consulting search engine optimization?

I hope to be hearing an expert advice regarding this soon.
