Since the problem is not stated clearly, I assume that the update you are referring to is the Live update option of the Norton Antivirus.

Here are two possible ways in fixing your problem.

Enable Smart Definitions in you Norton antivirus options.

Open Norton > find settings > Find Smart definitions > Turn from "off" to "on".

Exit Norton, then reopen. Run Norton Live update and see if it continues with the update.

If First option Fails, try this next procedure.

Using your computer, or another computer if available, go to this link. And download file 20121218-002-v5i32.exe. After download, run file in your computer to make sure that virus definitions are up to date. Exit Norton and re-open.

Try if the Live update runs after doing the procedure.

It would be much clear if you have mentioned the specific error message. But still I am giving some tips to solve upgrading problems. First go to Norton antivirus website and choose the particular Norton product that you are using. Then upgrade it manually. If this doesn’t work check whether your antivirus is of trial period.

If so them you need to purchase it. If these don’t help then there might a bug problem with your software. If your are getting this message “Symantec Service Framework has encountered a problem and needs to close” then there is a bug and it needs to be fixed. Symantec has released a software fix after lots of user has reported this problem.

You can download the patch from Symantec’s website.

After installing the update you can do the following:

1. Run the Norton product.

2.Click on run LiveUpdate.

3. After updating click on Close button.

4. Restart your system.

5. Continue updating until you see the message, there is no new updates.

I hope any of the above mentioned way will help you.

I think you need to re install your Norton Anti virus, then after that you can try to update, are you using an original copy of the software?

If not then you need to get a new one. Make sure that you complete the installation process so that you will have no problem updating your computer. You can do Live update and Manual update for your antivirus program.

In doing the Live update you can follow this simply instructions:

1.Open the Norton Antivirus program from your desktop or from the Start menu on your computer.

2.Click on "Options" in the top menu bar of the program.

3.Click on the small box beside "Enable Live Update." Click on "Apply

4.Close the program. Norton will automatically download and install the updates while you are working online.

For Manual Update.

1.Surf to the Symantec website with your Internet browser.

2.Use the search feature to locate the downloadable updates. Or use the link listed in the Resources below.

3.Download the latest update to your desktop or to a folder where you can locate it easily.

4.Click on the update file on your desktop or folder. This will install the update to the Norton Antivirus program, reboot the computer if prompted.
