Layer mask in Photoshop makes it easier for me to make changes in pictures. My trial period has expired so I am using GIMP at the moment. How can I use layer masks in GIMP? Do I need to download extensions or is it hidden somewhere in GIMP?

You can use layer mask in GIMP. Also it’s offer a flexible way to edit any layers. That makes more attractive composite images. Effectvely when you applied layer mask to a layer, it makes the layer transparent. To using layer mask in GIMO, follow the steps below-

At first select the layer which you want to use layer mask.

Now copy the layer  into the clipboard.

Now do it- Layer -> Mask -> Add new mask. It is for select the layer  you want to apply to layer mask.  Make sure to select the desired one.

After that, paste the layer that you copied before sometime.

In this step- go to the layer menu and select the anchor layer.

If you do this steps perfctly, then you are done.
