I am thinking of starting a software firm which will create products for outside companies. If I hire programmers for my business, how can I make sure that they will not use the source codes for their own personal benefit? Thanks.

Hello,

This is a serious problem because there are various methods to travel data from one place to another. The solution is finding all the methods that data can be leak and fix it. For that you can restrict using pen drive inside the office aria. This is the easiest way to take the code from you. Then you can provide internet connection with restricted to emails and other data sharing websites. It is better if do not provide internet connection. But it is hard thing because programmers always need to search on internet for certain things to help themselves. And make sure disconnect all the DVD/CD drivers and floppy disk drivers. Like that you can isolate the machine and protect the codes.

Hi Carlton,

Here are the things you can do:

1.Create a Non-Disclosure Agreement and let the programmer sign it. This prevents the programmer from sharing confidential material (e.g. source codes) to others and using it for certain purposes.

2. Makes sure that you monitor him/her when accessing files related to the program. You can  deny access from internet connection and USB ports while he is doing the job to restrict him from possible transfer and use of the codes.

3. To be safe, it is best to hire local programmers that are trusted in your community. If it inevitable to hire freelancers from the internet, check their portfolios and client reviews before hiring.

Hope these help!

You can use source control. But there is nothing, a remote developer can do that will not be reversible. What I know that, there is no dependable way you can protect your source codes from your remote developers. Without seeing or knowing about the source code, you programmers can’t work for you. You can better hire those people whom you can  believe. If one of your workers is evil, he/she won’t obey any agreement. If anybody memorize one line of your source code and if he/she is a good programmer, can make the whole. So, you must me alert while recruiting anybody. There is no other way. Good Luck
