How to create self signed certificate with encryptions?

I am on a process of making an online messaging system. I want make users to know them that they are sending their information to known party. So I decided to create self signed certificate. But I do not have good idea on that. I mean pros and cons. Are there another cost effective way to perform my requirements other than this.

Hello Meagan Williams,

                         If you want to make a certificate then I suggest you to use Photoshop to make the design. Because it is one of the best software that can help you in designing the certificate. After that you can also create the stamps in it as they are also important while making the certificates. After that you can make online system. That is a good thing but you need to make your system secure one so that no one can access without your permission.
