Windows Update Error 80072ee2 is faced when the files in your system are corrupted, or the updates are stuck. Before you proceed with the fix, make sure that your internet is working on your PC that is affected by this error since you will need to connect to the Windows Update servers to push back updates.

In my opinion, the best working fix for this update error is changing the registry and deleting some keys. I would like to tell you beforehand that not all users might have the registry key on their computers because they might be using Windows in a home-based environment. It means that home users will not have the key. Now to do this method, hold Windows Key and press R and on the run dialog, type services.msc and then click the OK button.

On the services console, locate the service named “Windows Update.” Right-click on the service now and select the stop option. We require stopping the “Windows Update” service responsible for updating Windows before we make changes to fix the corruption. If you do not stop, this will return an error message.

Now, press and hold the Windows Key and the “R” key again to open the run dialog box and in the Run dialog box and then type this “C:\Windows\Software Distribution” then Click OK then, erase the contents of this folder and then immediately return to the Services Console and right-click Windows Update service again and then select Start. Now, press and hold the Windows Key and the “R” key again to open the run dialog box and inside the Run dialog box, and then type Regedit in the Run dialog. And inside the registry editor, go to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Update.

On the right side, look for the registry keys called WU Server and WU Status-Server. After finding them, right-click on each of those registries keys and then, delete them at once.  Now, return to the service console and make sure the Windows Update service is still working. Once served, you should be able to update without errors.
