Error when attempting to run EICAR.COM

Hello fellow users,

When I attempted to run EICAR.COM, an error showed up, which is anticipated as EICAR is a DOS program and unable to run on Windows 8, but my question is I *should* get a virus warning, shouldn't I?

Hi Daan,

Yes you're correct. The Eicar File should have been detected by Windows 8 since EICAR is a file developed by European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research to test the response of a computer antivirus program without damaging the computer. However just as you have experienced, Windows 8 did not detect Eicar through its in-built antivirus program– Windows Defender. 

Please take note, that Windows 8 is still in development and a lot of bugs and errors are still on the new operating system. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview , released on February 29, 2012 is not yet the final product. If you are using the consumer preview, it is best to download third party security software for your safety.
