I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and I have had no problems using it – I can play games, do some editing – and so far have not experienced any crashing.  I tried to open a particular stage to play in CIV2 and clicked on it, but an error popped up which says, "Could not load the game: the file format is obsolete."  Please help.

There might be several causes to that problem, some of them are:

  • The CIV2 application that you are using is an outdated version, and therefore you will need to go to the internet and search for the latest version of that application and install it. You may also need to go to the applications tools and then check for updates so that obsolete databases in the application will be replaced by recent databases.
  • The problem may also be the version of the Civ2 application that you are using. In case your computer is a 64 bit, you will need to make sure that the Civ2 application that you are using is a 64 bit too for otherwise there will be compatibility issues.

“Sid Meier’s Civilization II” is quite an old game. If you were able to play it successfully on 64-bit Windows 7 but you can’t open a particular stage, try running the game in compatibility mode. On your desktop, right-click the Civilization II shortcut and select “Properties”. In “Properties” window, go to “Compatibility” tab then under “Compatibility mode”, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.

From the dropdown list, select and try one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP

Click “OK” then try playing the game again. See if it works. “Sid Meier’s Civilization II” supports Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. It requires 486 or faster processor, 8 MB RAM, SVGA video card, sound card, and 2x speed optical drive. This is a very old game so playing it on modern systems doesn’t guarantee that it will work.
