I recently purchased a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it.

I have a desktop PC with Windows XP Pro and I need to customize my sharing folder so I can transfer all my files from my desktop PC to my laptop.

What are the steps by steps procedure?

Any help will do.

Thank you.

Hello,

In order to share the files and folders between win 7 and win XP, you need to perform the following steps.

Please note this sharing is done using a basic wireless router.

  • Bring both the machines on a workgroup. On win 7 right click on my computer –properties- advance system settings, and on the top click on computer name. workgroup: should be WORKGROUP, if not change it by clicking on network id
  • Do the same with win XP computer
  • On the win 7, click on control panel- all control panel items-Network and sharing center and click change advance sharing settings

  • Match the settings as per fig below
  • Now go to the network on win 7 machine, you will be able to see your win XP machine also
  • Double click on your win 7 pc listed in the network, and double user icon.
  • You will see the shared folders if present, OR share some folders
  • On win XP machine, from MY NETWORK PLACES, you will be able to locate the shared folder on win 7
  • You can easily copy all the shared folders from win 7 to winXP
