Hi Carl!

You may use Mission Planner for scripting Pythons. It is an easy way to expand the functionality of the program further than its built-in functions. It may also enable you for integration anything easily with other dlls' and modules extreme past the original scope of the mission planner. You may easily program your UAV to do anything from automatic acrobatics to just script driven missions. You may also use bottle.py to enhance your python experience. You may use iPython and Autojump as well, to grow your Python experience. Learn more here: copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/common-using-python-scripts-in-mission-planner/
