This is pretty much the same with me where I was able to play a game after I was able to install it and the next time I tried playing it, it just bombed me. I can no longer play the game unlike the last time. In your case, it happened on the game Batman Arkham Asylum and with me, the game is Age of Empires III.

In my case, the problem I had was in the hardware. Though my operating system is supported as well as my processor, the problem was with the graphics accelerator. I am only using a built-in Intel 82845G/GL which is an Intel video card chipset integrated in my Dell motherboard with 64 MB video RAM. This video card is obviously not supported and it is included in the game’s documentation on unsupported graphics adapter.

In my desire to play the game, I just tried installing it though I know my video card is not supported and luckily I was able to play it immediately after the installation. But right after I close the game and reopen it just to see if it’s still going to work, I was right. The game no longer works and won’t start either.

In your case, since you are running Microsoft Windows 8, Batman Arkham Asylum is incompatible and you need a slightly older operating system to run it. Batman Arkham Asylum works only on Windows XP and Windows Vista and it will not work either on Windows 7. If you want to play it even on Windows 8, you need to install a virtual machine and in it install either Windows XP or Windows Vista and you can install and play the game from there.
