The answer of your question is yes, Facebook gradually loosing its popularity to instant messenger apps. Basically teenagers are using instant messenger apps more than Facebook. Not just teenagers, even veterans and mid age users are also using more instant messenger apps and less Facebook. GlobalWebIndex Social summary publishes a report for 3rd fiscal in 2014 in this topic, the report suggests that Facebook still holds more users but photo sharing and messaging through Facebook has been fallen off by 20% in last two years. So in case of presentation and usability also Facebook is loosing grip on teenagers.

Due to less memory usage from messengers teenagers even senior corporate professionals also stay online whole day and this makes them available to their contacts. In this way Facebook loosing its popularity and messengers are gaining popularity day by day.
