Well, AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML) is a platform (programming language) that  basically enables users to create functions and web applications that run in the background without reloading or refreshing the whole page. It is not one platform as most may think. It is a combination of a couple of them, mainly HTML and CSS. AJAX came about in an effort to create dynamism in web design.
