Procedures on installing Windows XP on new HDD

My computer has been attacked by malicious threats plus some issues which I frequently encountered; I was unlucky to save my hard disk. So I need to replace it with a new one.

With the new hard disk, while I’m trying to install Windows XP in it, I keep getting errors and issues. So I wonder if there are some mistakes in setting up Windows XP. Can someone here send me a procedure on how to do it properly? Thank you.

Procedures on installing Windows XP on new HDD

 

Hi Randy,

 

Please follow below steps to install Windows XP on new hard disk:

 

Begin:

 

1) Start your computer from the Windows XP CD (or boot disks). Insert the Windows XP setup CD into your CD or DVD drive, and restart your computer.

 

2) After restarting computer will prompt for boot from the CD, press Spacebar. (If you miss the prompt (it only appears for a few seconds), restart your computer to try again.)

 

3) At the Setup Welcome screen, press ENTER to begin with Windows XP Setup. During this portion of setup, your mouse will not work, so you must use the keyboard.

 

4) On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement page, read the licensing agreement. Press the Page Down key to scroll to the bottom of the agreement. Then press F8.

 

5) On this page setup will ask you for the drive on which you want to install the Windows XP. After selection of drive all data on your selected hard disk drive will be removed and cannot be recovered. (this might not be applicable for your case because you are using new hard disk with no data on it) It is extremely important that you have a recent backup copy of your files before continuing.

 

6) Select Unpartitioned space (unallocated space/Unused space on a hard disk) by hitting Enter, which appears by default.

 

7) Press Enter again to select Format the partition using the NTFS (New Technology File System) file system, which appears by default or File Allocation Table (FAT).

 

8) Formatting and then copying of setup files on selected drive is done in this step.

 

To continue the installation:

 

1) This point forward you can use your mouse. Eventually, the Regional and Language Options page appears. Click Next to accept the default settings. You can accept the default settings by clicking next or make changes for language settings. You also can change language settings after setup is complete.

 

2) On the Personalize Your Software page, type your name and your organization name.

 

3) On this screen type your product key as it appears on your Windows XP CD case. The product key is unique for every Windows XP installation. Then, click Next.

 

4) On the Computer Name and Administrator Password page, in the Computer name box, type a name that uniquely identifies your computer. You cannot use spaces or punctuation. If you connect your computer to a network, you will use this computer name to find shared files and printers.

 

Type a strong password that you can remember in the Administrator password box, and then retype it in the Confirm password box. Write the password down and store it in a secure place. Click Next.

 

5) On the Date and Time Settings page, set your computer’s clock. Then, click the Time Zone down arrow, and select your time zone. Click Next.

 

6) Windows XP will spend about a minute configuring your computer. On the Networking Settings page, click Next.

 

7) On the Workgroup or Computer Domain page, click Next.

 

To complete the installation:

 

1) Windows XP will spend 20 or 30 minutes configuring your computer and will automatically restart when finished. When the Display Settings dialog appears, click OK.

 

2) When the Monitor Settings dialog box appears, click OK.

 

3) The final stage of setup begins. On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows page, click Next.

 

(In below steps select options as per your requirements.)

 

4) On the Help protect your PC page, click Help protect my PC by turning on Automatic Updates now. Then, click Next.

 

5) Windows XP will then check if you are connected to the Internet:

 

a. If you are connected to the Internet, select the choice that describes your network connection on the. Will this computer connect to the Internet directly, or through a network page? If you’re not sure, accept the default selection, and click Next.

 

b. If you use dial-up Internet access, or if Windows XP cannot connect to the Internet, you can connect to the Internet after setup is complete. On the How will this computer connect to the Internet page, click Skip.

 

6) Windows XP Setup displays the Ready to activate Windows page. If you are connected to the Internet, click Yes, and then click Next. If you are not yet connected to the Internet, click No, click Next, and then skip to step 24. After setup is complete, Windows XP will automatically remind you to activate and register your copy of Windows XP.

 

7) On the Ready to register with Microsoft page, click Yes, and then click Next.

 

8) On the Collecting Registration Information page, complete the form. Then, click Next.

 

9) On the Who will use this computer page, type the name of each person who will use the computer. You can use first names only, nicknames, or full names. Then click Next.

 

10) On the Thank you! page, click Finish.

Hi Randy,

 

This method is used for a clean installation of Windows XP. This will remove all data from your disk by reformatting your hard disk and will reinstall the operating system and programs to an empty hard disk. To perform a clean installation of Windows XP, you can follow these steps:

 

1. First take a back of all your important information before you perform this installation. Save the backup in any external location like CD or external hard disk. 

2. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD drive and then restart your computer. See that the BIOS setting on your computer must be configured to do this.

3. When you see” Press any key to boot from CD” message, press any key to start your computer from Windows XP CD.

4. Press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup at Welcome to Setup option.

5. Press F8 after reading Microsoft Software License Terms.

6. Follow the instructions that will pop up on the screen and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.

7. Then follow the instructions on the screen to complete your Windows XP Setup. 

 

If you have successfully installed Windows XP, you are done. If these given steps does not help you to install Windows XP then go to the “Next Steps” section.

 

2. Upgrade to Windows XP:

 

This method will describe you how to upgrade to Windows XP from Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 2000 Professional.

 

You may disconnect your Internet during the installation. Though this step is not necessary yet disconnecting from Internet during installation will help you protect your computer. Follow these steps to install your Windows XP:

 

1. First start your computer and insert your Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD drive.

2. Click on the Install Windows option to start the Windows XP Setup Wizard. 

 

If Windows does not detects your CD automatically then click Start. And then click Run. Type the following command, and then click OK: 

 

CD drive letter:setup.exe

 

3. When a message pops up saying to select an installation type, select Upgrade and then click Next.

4. Then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the upgrade.

 

If you have successfully upgraded to Windows XP, you are done. If these given steps do not help you to upgrade to Windows XP then go to the “Next Steps” section.

 

3) Install Windows XP to a new hard disk.

 

In this method you can install Windows XP to a new hard disk. This is done when a new hard disk is installed on your computer.

 

But before you begin, you have to start your computer by using one of the following media:

 

• Microsoft Windows 98/Windows Millennium startup disk.

• Windows XP CD or Windows XP boot disks.

 

Follow these steps to install Windows XP to a new hard disk:

 

1. First start your computer from the Windows XP CD. Insert your Windows XP CD to do this into your CD or DVD drive and then restart your computer.

2. When "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on your screen, press any key to start the computer from your Windows XP CD.

3. At Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to begin with Windows XP Setup.

4. Press F8 after reading Microsoft Software License Terms. 

5. When you are asked for the Windows XP CD, insert your Windows XP CD.

6. Restart your computer.

7. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.

8. At Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.

9. Follow the instructions that are shown on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.

10. Then follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup.

 

If you have successfully upgraded your Windows XP, you are done. If these steps do not help you install Windows XP to a new hard disk then go to the "Next Steps" section.

Procedures on installing Windows XP on new HDD

In addition to the solutions listed by our very helpful colleagues above, I’d like to ask if you are using an IDE or SATA hard drive in your computer as the primary hard drive or the hard drive where you install your operating system on.

Windows XP does not have the drivers necessary to recognize the SATA drives and you need to have the drivers available for the installation to proceed, otherwise it will give you errors.

If you can’t find the drivers for your SATA hard drive (usually you can find the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer’s website), you can just disable AHCI from the BIOS or just allow compatible operation for IDE and SATA from your BIOS.
